The screws you removed that hold the license plate light in place can be reused with the bracket installed, but don't over-tighten them or you'll need to get longer screws. Use locktite or lock washers on the camera mounting screws so they don't work their way loose over time. Then, re-install the camera using the two short 8-32 screws that you just trimmed. #Uconnect 2014 dodge challenger backup camera install installTo install the bracket, remove the license plate light screws, then slide the bracket up between the light and the bumper cover, then replace the screws. #Uconnect 2014 dodge challenger backup camera install crackIf you leave them too long, they could crack the license plate light lens. If the camera screws stick out the back of the bracket, cut them flush using a file or dremel tool. The screws may be too long, so try installing the camera to the bracket before you install the bracket. You'll need some 8-32X1/4" Phillips head screws to mount the camera to the bracket. The two outside holes are drilled through using a quarter inch drill bit.Īfter I had the shape and the holes I wanted, I sanded the part and gave it two coats of flat black spray paint. I used an 8-32 tap kit from Home Depot for the two inside holes. I used a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade to cut the majority of metal out of the bracket, then I used a flat file to improve it more. I can see fully side to side - the bumper doesn't block the camera view at all. The bracket is almost completely hidden.įifth and last picture shows my radio screen when the car is in reverse and the camera is on. In reality, that camera is tiny and is barely visible unless you stoop down and look for it. The plate is still lit up at night just fine - and the light doesn't affect the camera because the bracket blocks the light from shining on the camera.įourth picture shows the same picture as the third picture but no lines drawn on the picture. In case you're wondering, the bracket does partially block the license plate light, but only slightly. The bracket is held in place using the license plate light screws, and is sandwiched between the license plate light and the bumper cover. On this picture, I drew a red line showing the outline of the installed bracket (mostly hidden above the bumper cover) and I also drew a blue line showing where the license plate light still shines down on the license plate from behind the bracket. Third picture shows the bracket and camera installed. After that, I sanded it and sprayed the bracket flat black (2 coats). The two 1/4" outside holes (for mounting the bracket to the car) are drilled and the two inside holes (for mounting the camera to the bracket) are tapped to 8-32 thread. Second picture shows the bracket cut to the shape I wanted. I cut off the length I needed, drew the cut and drill marks on the metal, then worked it until it was the shape I wanted. It started out as 1.5" wide X 3 feet long and is 1/8" thick. The pictures show some of the stages of the bracket manufacture and install.įirst picture is a diagram of the bracket. I wanted something that was hidden as much as possible, so I made the bracket that holds the camera since I couldn't find anything already made. I recently finished installing a backup camera in my 2011 Challenger.
